The Lasansky Gallery & Studio began in a mission house on Iowa Avenue in 1990 and moved soon thereafter to its current location on South Clinton Street in Iowa City. The space is a combined studio for printmaking and painting as well as a gallery showing the work of Tomas and Charlie Lasansky and several Iowa artists who work or have worked at the studio over the years. The space originally was a welding and concrete warehouse with a small house attached to the front. For the first few years the front space was rented to a local law firm as Tomas and Charlie converted the industrial warehouse space to studio and gallery space in many phases over the years. In 2002, renovations began on converting the former law offices into gallery space. Completed in 2004, the Lasansky Gallery & Studio hosted many exhibitions over the following decade. Over that time, the size and volume of work created grew. To accommodate this, a major addition broke ground in the summer of 2013. Three floors of studio space were added, bringing the Lasansky Gallery & Studio to its current state of 10,500 square feet. In addition to the vast gallery spaces, it includes a complete intaglio printmaking shop with four American French Tool presses (including one of the largest ever built) and several painting studios. In the Fall of 2016, the property adjacent to the studio was acquired and converted into an open yard and garden space that may one day allow the studio to grow even further.
